Betsy Larson, Children's House Mentor & Co-Guide

Betsy has been at Alpine Montessori for almost ten years and brings a plethora of Montessori knowledge and experience. She is currently a Co-Guide & Mentor in our Children’s House class.

After attending Georgia State University, Betsy continued her education by taking the AMI Primary Teachers Training course in Atlanta, Georgia. This was in 1972 and Montessori was still very new in the United States. Betsy worked as a teacher in Atlanta for several years but then moved with her family to Charleston, South Carolina. While there, she started a Montessori school with a group of teachers – this school is now a successful public Montessori School. Eventually Betsy and her family moved to Dallas, Texas. Here, she gained an Elementary (6-12) Montessori certification and taught this age group for the next six years.

By this time, one of her daughters had graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Asia Studies, moved to China and started a family of her own. Betsy was very interested in being a part of her grandchildren’s lives so she eventually relocated to China. In China, Betsy worked in a Primary (3-6) class and trained a group of teachers on the 3-6 Montessori curriculum. While in China she fell in love with the way of life and how committed people were to caring for children.

When it was time to return to the United States, Betsy and her extended family decided to move to Alpine because they had previously visited the Big Bend region and loved it. It was a bonus that Alpine had a Montessori school where her grandchildren continued their Montessori education, and she could continue teaching in a Montessori environment.
